The seasons have changed, and Autumn is upon us. After a hot summer, we are welcoming the cooler weather and always find Autumn such a stunning time of the year here in Wānaka. It is also one of the best times to get out into the hills and go hiking. We are very fortunate to have many hikes on our doorstep, and something for everyone. One of our favourites is the infamous Roy’s Peak track.
Roy’s Peak overlooks the lake, and the track begins from the carpark on the Mount Aspiring Road (6km from town). You climb from lake level through farmland then up into the tussock tops to the 1578 m summit.
The track is well-formed and moderately challenging as it is steep in some places but the effort put in is well worth it for the stunning views from the top (and yes, for the Instagram worthy photos!). You will see spectacular views of Lake Wānaka and its islands and bays, as well as the snow-capped Southern Alps including Tititea/Mt Aspiring. We recommend starting this walk early in the morning when it is cooler, and to take plenty of water with you as there are no trees to offer shade on the track.
Make sure you remember your camera – the photo opportunities from Roy’s Peak are endless!

Take care
