Whether you’ve been visiting Wanaka for years or this is your first time, there always seems to be a ‘pinch yourself’ moment looking at the picturesque views here. While hard to take a bad picture, we’ve pulled together a list of some of the most photogenic spots around Wanaka.
1. Roys Peak
If you are prepared to make the hike (sometimes with snow on the track if you do it in Winter!), you will be rewarded with unbeatable views of Wanaka and the surrounding mountain ranges. The Roys Peak Track is a 5-6 hour return walk, zigzagging up the side of Mount Roy. It’s a steep incline with stunning views along the way – we think the best photos are taken from just below the summit.
2. Rocky Mountain
If you’re needing an Instagram worthy view that’s a little more gentle on the body, Rocky Mountain is a crowd favourite. Although slightly steep at time, this approx. 2-3 hour return walk gives unbeatable views of Glendhu Bay, Wanaka and the Southern Alps! What’s not to love?
3. Mount Aspiring National Park
Not exactly in Wanaka, this National Park is just an hour’s drive from the town centre and should definitely be on your to-do list. If you’re not short on time, check out some of the awesome day walks or overnight tracks. Mount Aspiring National Park is a World Heritage area with dramatic mountains and vibrant blue river valleys. The number of swing bridges and waterfalls means you’ve got plenty to photograph!
4. Cardrona and Treble Cone
Here during the ski season? Head up to Cardrona or Treble Cone to carve fresh turns and get stunning views! Even if you’ve missed the snow, you can still drive up the Mt Aspiring Road to check out unbeatable views of Wanaka from Treble Cone. If it’s hot, we suggest stopping at the Glendhu Bay Motor Camp on your way back for an ice cream.
5. Any winery in the region
We can’t just pinpoint one winery around Wanaka to take pictures (and drink delicious beverages) at – they’re all too photogenic! From beautiful Otago stone buildings to leafy grapevine filled fields, you’ll have no problem finding one that takes your breath away.
